For primary cases of baldness, the follicular unit extraction (FUE) method of hair transplantation, or variations of this technique, has become the “gold standard” in use today. In nature, hair emerges from the scalp in units of one, two, three, and even four hairs. These units are called “follicular units.” When hair is transplanted in these “follicular units,” it appears natural and has a high rate of transplantation survival. EstePlastHair Doctors use follicular units and follicular groupings for most primary hair restorations but can perform revision work with follicular unit and other hair transplantation methods.

What are the advantages of an FUE procedure?

Some of the advantages of the FUE procedure include:

  • It is a less invasive surgery than FUT with no visible scarring in the donor area
  • It is ideal for short sessions and for patients in early stages of hair loss
  • It is ideal for patients who have no problem in shaving their heads
  • It is ideal for mustache or eyebrow replacement

Ideal Candidates

You may be a candidate for FUE if you have large patches of thinning hair or bald spots. You may have tried nonsurgical treatments such as shampoos, topical medications, PRP (platelet-rich plasma), or laser therapy, but are still unhappy with the overall results. While these treatments can help slow or prevent hair loss, they generally are not able to restore or reverse advanced hair loss. FUE can be done on most hair types, textures, and colors. During your private consultation, we will evaluate your hair and scalp to determine if you have enough donor follicles to achieve your aesthetic goals, and we will then create a custom treatment plan for you.

FUE Hair Transplant Process

1. Hair Preparation:

The donor area is prepared by washing and shaving an area from the side or back of the head normally ear to ear. A local anaesthetic is applied to reduce discomfort whilst the hair transplant surgeon uses a state of the art electronic punch to extract the individual hair grafts. An antiseptic dressing is applied to the donor area which can be removed the following day.

2. Hair Extraction:

The grafts are extracted using a 0.8mm electronic punch and categorised into grafts containing one, two or three hairs. Once selected by EstePlastHair’s technicians, the hairs are prepared for transplantation. The hair extraction process typically takes between 1-3 hours, depending on the number of grafts to be extracted.

3. Canals Opening:

Before we start transplanting the hair follicles, the donor region at the back and side of the head is locally anesthetized.
After the anesthesia, the grafts consisting of one to four hairs are removed one by one  using a hollow needle  from the donor area. Next, the grafts are laid in a fluid to ensure that the hair stays well and implantable.

4. The Grafts implantation :

In order to be able to implant the hair in the receiving area, an opening is made using a special instrument where the grafts are implanted. Within a few days the hair follicles grow into the scalp. However, the transplanted hair falls out after two weeks, which is a natural process. After about three to four months after hair transplant, the implanted hair begins to grow.

What to expect?

After the procedure and once you have been safely monitored, you will be released to relax and recuperate at home. Prior to your release, we will go over your recovery instructions including how you may look immediately after your transplant surgery and how to care for the extracted and implanted areas. You will most likely have some redness and inflammation in the donor and transplant sites for a few days. Small scabs around the transplanted follicles can typically be found for 7 – 10 days. Several weeks after the procedure, the transplanted follicles will transition to the resting phase of hair growth. This typically lasts for 3 – 4 months. During this time, the hairs will fall out, but this is totally normal and to be expected. The transplanted follicles will move back into the growing phase and new hair will begin to appear day by day. It typically takes about 9 – 12 months for your final results to be visible. At this point, your hair should look thicker and fuller. To maintain your new results, we may recommend ongoing nonsurgical treatments, such as topical medications or specialized shampoo, as well as PRP therapy for certain patients.
